A lot of the time, good waves around Wellington in New Zealand are hard to come by. But if you are prepared to hit the road & do a little searching, you can certainly score some great waves. This weekend I did just that, & these are the photos I shot during my search for waves over at the Wairarapa.
  • Large swells travel for thousands of kilometers before they hit the coast of the Wairarapa - A reef break off in the distance on the south coast of the Wairarapa.

  • You'll need a good wetsuit to surf during winter in New Zealand - View of the snow capped Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island of New Zealand from the south coast of the Wairarapa.

  • You will usually come across stock on the road at least once when driving on the roads of the Wairarapa. This time round it was a herd of cows.

  • Rural gravel road down to an uncrowded Wairarapa surf break.

  • I arrived at this break with only a few guys out. Looks small in this photo, but those waves were a decent 4 foot plus.

  • Line up from the rural car park.

  • The inside section was popular with those not wanting the long paddle out to the back break.

  • Rural surfing lifestyle - walking back home & stopping to chat after a surf at one of the Wairarapa surf spots.
    wairarapaSurf050710-0...jpg

  • No sandy white beaches here - it's as raw as it gets...run up to the car to get warm after an afternoon of surfing.
    wairarapaSurf050710-1...jpg

  • You'll find lots of old run down & abandoned sheds on your travels through the Wairarapa.
    wairarapaSurf050710-0...jpg

  • The outside break grinding through.
    wairarapaSurf050710-1...jpg

  • Working the inside section. It can get pretty shallow here & you are surfing over a rocky reef. Every now & then a rock does pop up that you need to dodge...
    wairarapaSurf050710-1...jpg

  • Late afternoon & cars parked at the beach in front of the surf break. A bonfire is burning so those coming in from a surf can warm up. Even though it was a magical day, the current temperature here is around 8 degrees celsius.

  • Nothing like letting loose & throwing that board around...
    wairarapaSurf050710-1...jpg

  • An empty break lining up down the road. You could pretty much drive along the gravel road, pick your spot & have it all to yourself.
    wairarapaSurf050710-1...jpg

  • Late afternoon cutback - By this stage most of the break was in shadow from the sun going behind the large hills just behind the beach. But there was a small gap between the hills where the sun was still getting though, & this was the only part it was shining on.
    wairarapaSurf050710-1...jpg

  • Late afternoon surf perfection in the Wairarapa, no one around except for the sheep...
    wairarapaSurf050710-0...jpg

  • There's lots of coast to explore & usually not many other people around - A very uncrowded break just a few hours from Wellington city.

  • Late afternoon tree silhouette.

  • Two mates out surfing & sharing this spot. I wonder if they were getting lonely...

  • New Zealand is renown for sheep - they are everywhere...you can even find them on some of the rural beaches. I bet they have seen some good surf days!

  • The late afternoon golden hour in the Wairarapa, the light was pretty amazing that day...
